nearly $500,000 in grants for projects that included San Gabriel River
and Angeles National Forest Gateway Interpretive Center in Azusa;
Buena Vista Lagoon Nature Center Native Plant Area in Oceanside; Sam +
Alfreda Maloof Foundation in Rancho Cucamonga; Casa Romantica Cultural
Center in San Clemente; and Francisco Estudillo Heritage Park in San

"No Stone Unturned" brings together a distinguished group of artists,
landscape architects and other experts in this emerging field.
They have
created and considered inanimate objects, arranged ephemera, manipulated live
matter and designed spaces that combine all of the above," said Susanne
Slavick, head of the School of Art .m. The "backyard" of the home features native plants that
are well suited for the region's climate and soils, thereby reducing the need
for supplemental watering and fertilizing.
The Home Habitat Garden is designed, constructed and sponsored by DCNR,
Audubon Pennsylvania, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, the Pennsylvania
Fish and Boat Commission, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Debra
Kirkpatrick of Landscape Architectural Design.

Metropolitan to foster the appreciation of native and California
Friendly -- or drought-tolerant -- plants and encourage efficient
irrigation techniques in public, commercial and residential

Grants are available within four broad categories: institutional
grants of up to $150,000 for institution-wide landscaping at three or
more sites; signature grants of up to $75 ,000 for high-visibility
public landscapes that feature native and California Friendly plant
palettes , state-of-the-art irrigation and strong community involvement
and educational components; small parks and garden grants of up to
$20,000 for smaller scale projects that feature landscape design and
irrigation easily translatable in a residential garden; and next step
grants available solely for past City Makeover grant recipients to
further their education component."
Planners say that by addressing these topics and others, the symposium
will foster a lively discussion between practitioners of widely differing
philosophies.

design respond to historical contexts? What role does ecology play? Are
modernist and post-modernist attitudes still viable in transforming large-

in home landscapes, the Home Habitat Garden features a bird sanctuary,
butterfly and bee niche, a pond, a rain barrel and rain garden, and
landscaping with native stones and materials . "Thanks to contributors and our conservation
partners, we are able to show homeowners that landscaping with native plants
not only is good for species and the environment, it also reduces the need for
excessive maintenance.
