election results certified. Spartan Foods appealed this decision, sending the
case to the NLRB office in Washington, D., where a ruling took nearly three
years. The UFCW is one of the
three largest unions in the Michigan AFL-CIO.

union to file unsubstantiated charges with the NLRB in the hopes of generating
publicity and damaging a company's reputation.
"The union has ignored our call for an election and hasn't even said why
it doesn't want to hold an election," said Bailey. Due to a dispute over
voter eligibility, the ballots were impounded.

"The workers at the Oscoda store weren't the only ones eagerly awaiting
this decision," Mark Charrette, Local 876's organizing director, said.
UFCW Local 876 represents over 22,000 workers in eastern and northern
Michigan who work for Kroger, Farmer Jack, Rite Aid, and at numerous other
commercial worksites including meat packing plants.
