Freedom (CCF) criticized the misleadingly named Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine (PCRM) for attempting to block research at Ohio State
University that could one day lead to cures for debilitating spinal cord

reconstructive surgery, including the surgical reattachment of
her nose.

During the week-long criminal trial, Gomoll claimed that he was
a victim of domestic violence acting in self-defense, and that
Stombres' mother must have been accidentally stabbed in the
neck during a struggle for the knife. Gomoll
was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with probability that he
will be released after serving nine years.

Believing that she witnessed her mother 's murder but that
criminal justice was not served, Stombres turned to the civil
justice system. On July 29, 2003, Stombres filed a civil
lawsuit against Gomoll for her injuries from the aggravated
