Newsweek won for three issues surrounding the Abu Ghraib prison scandal:
"No Good Defense" (May 17), by Evan Thomas, which laid out the full scope of
the interrogations debacle and detailed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's
responsibility for creating the atmosphere in which it occurred; "The Roots of
Torture" (May 24) by John Barry, Michael Hirsh and Michael Isikoff, which
traced the abusive interrogation practices back to decisions made and memos
drafted a year or more earlier by senior officials in the administration; and
"A Tortured Debate" (June 21) by Hirsh, Daniel Klaidman and Barry which showed
for the first time that the interrogation techniques began as a series of
specific discussions inside White House Counsel Alberto Gonzalez's office in
response to CIA requests for guidance in the handling of uncooperative Qaeda
suspects. The problem goes far beyond the seemingly limitless pool of suicide
bombers, write Baghdad Bureau Chief Scott Johnson and Beijing Bureau Chief
Melinda Liu in the June 27 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, June 20).

NEWSWEEK: Intelligence Officials in Baghdad Fear Hundreds of 'Ghost Soldiers' are Working for the Insurgency While Keeping Up Their Ties in Uniform

The Iraqi security forces have made great strides in the past year , and
they performed well after the recent bombing of the Golden Mosque of Samarra. The vast majority of
Iraqis have shown they want a future of freedom and peace. We're harnessing
every available resource, the ingenuity of our best scientists and engineers,
and the determination of our military to defeat this threat -- and we're not
going to rest until this danger to our troops has been removed . And the sacrifice
being made by our young men and women who wear the uniform has been heartening
and inspiring.

in many areas to reflect the hard realities on the ground. Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq was an enemy of
America who shot at our airplanes, had a history of pursuing and using weapons

As we take the fight to the terrorists, they realize they cannot defeat us
directly in battle, so they have resorted to brutal attacks against innocent
Iraqis and American forces using improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. IEDs

detonated remotely, using everyday devices like garage door openers and

Regarding the news that 176 Iraqi police officers were found to have

number of infiltrators. They deployed Iraqi security forces to

executions are being taken very seriously.
