PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, An important private
collection of metalwork by 19th century designer Christopher Dresser valued
in excess of US$500,000 has been brought to Philadelphia by Scottish
auctioneers Lyon and Turnbull. He
studied botany at the Government School of Design and continued to lecture
there in botany, in relation to industrial design. In 1860 he was conferred a
Doctor of Philosophy "in consideration of his services to botanical science"
but having failed to secure the post of Chair of Botany at the University of
London he decided to concentrate on design.
