Tulsa's Philbrook Museum of Art Constructs Five Pavilions in 23-Acre Garden

, Tulsa's Philbrook Museum of Art
will be host all summer to LANDed competition's five winning emerging
architects' pavilions, each built on a $5,000 budget.
The national competition was by invitation to noted emerging architects
and resulted in 45 invitations and 35 submissions . The permanent collection, assembled by Alice
Walton and the Walton Family Foundation, will be composed of paintings and
sculptures by American artists from the Revolutionary period through the
modern era.

The gardens re-opened to the public
April 2004 after a $7 million renovation and expansion.

Local Manhattan Construction President John Snyder added, "We became
involved for two reasons , one, it was a tough challenge given the nature of
the materials specified and the budget restrictions and two, Manhattan, as a
national company, has never been involved in anything like this in any of our
markets. All winning entries integrate with the garden
layout, are environmentally safe and built to withstand Oklahoma's
unpredictable winds and hot summer sun.

Winslow Homer's depictions of the interplay between man and nature; Eastman
Johnson's insights into rural 19th century America; and Edward Hopper's
interpretations of urban reality.

Our team has learned a great deal and the project has enhanced our
appreciation of innovative ideas from these national architects. Designed by Boston-based
architect Moshe Safdie, the museum is expected to open in May 2009 and will
present perspectives on the flow of America's history and heritage through the

Executive Director Brian Ferriso said, "With LANDed: Innovative Garden
Sculptures, we went beyond drawings to construction, which appears to be
unique in architectural competitions. It is situated on 23 acres with formal
and informal gardens, walking paths and sculpture . Durand's masterwork in a major
new art museum to be built in Bentonville, Arkansas. In addition , temporary exhibitions drawn from national institutions
will be displayed in the museum.
"I expect Crystal Bridges to become a major museum of American art and to

Winning entries are constructed of steel, plastic, rope, aluminum , live
plants and other materials. BENTONVILLE, Ark.
The museum will house a permanent collection of masterworks from American
artists.
In addition to "Kindred Spirits," the museum's permanent collection will
include numerous notable paintings, including: portraitist Charles Willson
Peale 's 18th century painting of a confident George Washington completed near
the end of the Revolutionary War.

great part the brain-child of recently-hired Executive Director Ferriso and
Exhibition Coordinator Susan Cronk.
The museum, "Crystal Bridges ," takes its name from an inspired
glass-and-wood design that traverses a local stream.
