of the Upper Midwest is saddened to hear of the death of Dana Reeve, a singer,
activist and the widow of actor Christopher Reeve, of lung cancer.
Reeve's death, like the recent lung cancer death of television news anchor
Peter Jennings , is expected increase interest in smoking cessation programs
like the American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking program. "We need to join the other states that have gone smoke free and
pass strong , fair laws that protect the health of all workers and patrons "
"We know that 90 percent of lung cancer is linked to direct smoking, the
other ten percent is tied to occupational exposures, radon and secondhand
smoke," said Pat McKone, a senior director of tobacco control with the
American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest.

cause of the 44-year-old former cabaret singer's disease has not been
determined, it does draw attention to the fact lung cancer remains the most
deadly type of cancer for both men and women, causing an estimated 162,460
deaths in the United States this year. Compton has been a member of the Board of Directors since
