housing options to residents of San Francisco focusing on affordable
housing for families and seniors.

After almost a decade of planning, the revitalization of Valencia
Gardens was made possible through a network of partnerships and
collaborations at the local, state and federal levels. Because there are no additional federal HOPE VI
funds available for San Francisco, Valencia Gardens could be the last
development of its kind, unless the San Francisco Housing Authority is
successful in implementing a local HOPE VI model without HUD funds.
The proposed federal budget for 2006-2007 eliminates the HOPE VI
program entirely.
"This new housing will make a dramatic improvement in the lives of
the families who live here," said Anita Ortiz, President of the
Valencia Gardens Resident Council.

SAN FRANCISCO----

Infamous 1940s Era Housing Project is Gone; Residents Attend Ceremony
for Design They Helped Create; Revitalization Increases Total
Number of Homes

At a ceremony held today, the Mission Housing Development
Corporation (MHDC) and the San Francisco Housing Authority celebrated
the revitalization of Valencia Gardens, the last of five
federally-funded HOPE VI public and affordable housing developments in
San Francisco .
"Valencia Gardens is remarkable because it more than replaces the
public housing units that were here before, it provides a more
appropriate number of bedrooms per unit to match family demographics ,
and actually adds affordable public housing for working families and
seniors," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Most importantly, Valencia Gardens is integrated into
its neighborhood with new public roads and walkways, as opposed to
being isolated by fencing, as was the case with the previous project.
