of numerous books, including groundbreaking manuals on photographic technique.
In 1946, he helped to establish the first academic department to teach
photography, at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now the

department in the world dedicated to photography at the Museum of Modern Art
in New York. Awarded the Nation's highest honor, the Presidential Medal
of Freedom, Ansel Adams remains today the most honored photographer of the
