New Palm
Discoveries in New Guinea
, A recent expedition led by
Conservation International has discovered
a treasure trove of new species in
the remote mountains of New Guinea."
New Guinea is one
of the least well-known areas of plant diversity left in
the tropics and is an area of high priority
for palm research. Thus, taxonomic inventory work on
palms throughout the eastern part of this region
has been identified by
Conservation International as a high priority.
Prior to the launch
of IMAGE, the energetic particles and electrically
charged gas (plasma) surrounding the Earth were
completely invisible to human
observers. James Burch is the mission principal Investigator, and Thomas

The project is working to document and conserve the palms
of this
under explored and still largely intact forest region.
Science highlights include:
- Confirmations: plasma plume creation, post-midnight peak in storm
plasmas, the neutral
solar wind, terrestrial origin of geospace storm
plasmas and continuous nature of magnetic
reconnection.archaeopteryx extinction
IMAGE enabled researchers to study the global structure and
dynamics of the Earth's
inner magnetosphere as it responded to energy from
solar winds.
"Nearly six years of imagery
by the pioneering cameras on IMAGE
revolutionized our understanding of geospace and our knowledge
of its space
weather," said James Burch, IMAGE principal investigator at the Southwest

Institute, San Antonio.
