WASHINGTON, Department of Education -- The
Siemens Teacher Scholarships, a collaboration between the Thurgood Marshall
Scholarship Fund, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the Siemens
Foundation, aimed at encouraging minority students to pursue teaching careers
in math and science , was officially announced today at the Department of
Education. "The Siemens Foundation scholarship money will help
increase the number of teachers going into America's classrooms.
"If American technology companies are to continue creating cutting edge
innovations and high paying jobs, we need to be sure that all American high
school students develop the necessary math and science skills they will
require to take advantage of these opportunities," said Thomas N. "All students deserve a
sound , quality education that will set them on the road to economic
prosperity."

Education, in its first year, will award grants totaling $87 ,000 to 30
teachers and their respective schools to further promote innovative lessons in
the fields of math, science, engineering and technology.
Applications are being mailed to all Michigan public schools as well as to
every school superintendent. It's imperative for our future workforce."
A total of 10 prizes will be awarded to each school level: elementary,
middle/junior and high school. Winners who place fourth through
10th place will receive $500 grants.
"Students begin to decide at an early age whether they are interested in
science and math," said Science Center President + CEO Kevin F. Prihod.
Winners will be based on submissions that clearly demonstrate unique,
creative avenues for teaching students math, science, technology and
engineering skills while also bringing passion and excitement to the

organizations that are active in promoting post-secondary education for
minority students -- the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the UNCF --
will administer the funds. "It is therefore imperative that
we provide the necessary resources to broaden the pool of qualified math and
science teachers, especially in communities that have been traditionally
under-represented in the fields of science and technology ."
"The growing shortage of qualified math and science teachers in this
country will impact America's economy for years to come if it is not
addressed," said Dr.

To help combat that trend and increase the number of potential U.
"The decrease in the number of students pursuing careers that require
math, science and technical courses is a reflection of U. The grants will go to schools and used

According to a study commissioned by the
National Science Foundation, only six percent of the world's graduating
engineers are from the United States. Those numbers are far behind other
countries, such as India (36 percent ), China (22 percent) and Japan (10
percent).
The competition recognizes Michigan public school teachers who are
committed to stimulating students' interest and academic achievement in math,
engineering , science and technological courses. Gov. Jennifer
Granholm is serving as the honorary chair and Chrysler Group Chief Operating
Officer Eric Ridenour will host the event. At Chrysler Group, we look for the best and the
brightest, and we want to encourage young people to enter fields that require
technical backgrounds. "Once
they start to dislike these subjects, we have lost them as future engineers or
scientists. The Closing the Technology Gap in Education awards are so
critical because they recognize the teachers who keep math and science
interest alive during those critical years before college."
All applications must be submitted by March 22, 2006, to The New Detroit
Science Center.

Million Dollar Scholarship Fund Established to Encourage Minority Students to Pursue Careers in Teaching Math and Science

This program marks the first time the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund
and the UNCF will collaborate in an effort to target both private and public
colleges. The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund has 47 member public HBCUs;
the UNCF provides operational support to the 38 private institutions. This makes this grant unique for two reasons: There is a need
for more qualified minority math and science teachers , and HBCUs have long
been the training ground for new leaders in education as well as
mathematicians , scientists and engineers. Michael Lomax, UNCF's President and CEO. "The Siemens
Teacher Scholarships will allow more minority students to pursue careers in
math and science, which will ultimately increase the nation's success in
producing more qualified math and science teachers. Overall, support from
organizations like the Siemens Foundation has helped UNCF support more
minorities in higher education and we are excited to be a part of this
scholarship program.
