About NIF and Laser Research at LLNL

The NIF project is currently under construction at LLNL with funding from
the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Nuclear Security
Administration. The maximum grant values are:
NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field: $989,282; NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory , Pasadena: $1,465,850.
The program supports the application of emerging information technologies ,
concepts, and methodologies to demonstrate their feasibility and potential
science return; informs missions and research disciplines of promising
techniques and capabilities worthy of broader application and/or further
development through full maturity.

NIF will also have basic
science applications in such areas as astrophysics, hydrodynamics, and
material properties, and is expected to provide insight into the viability
of thermonuclear fusion as a future economic energy source. WASHINGTON , NASA's Science Mission Directorate,
