NIF is the
latest in a long line of large laser systems at LLNL dating
back to the
mid-1970's built for inertial confinement fusion research. (IPFlex) today announced that
they have jointly developed two-dimensional
fast Fourier transform accelerator (FFT accelerator)
(1) using DAPDNA-2(2)
dynamically reconfigurable processor(3), shortening phase retrieval process
by
an order of magnitude. It spends mere 87 seconds for a 1000-repetition phase
retrieval for
1024x1024 pixel image reconstruction, while conventional
CPU-based system spends more than 20 minutes
to do the same. Until now, researchers had to either wait until entire sample
data was collected
, or spend much time analyzing the intermediate data, before
deciding to proceed with the test. The
Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and
RIKEN (The Institute of Physical and Chemical
Research) started construction
of SPring-8 in 1991 and completed the construction and opened the
facility in

"We believe our broad portfolio of analog, digital

coupled with our industry-leading expertise in integrated optics, allow us
to meet very unique needs for our customers' mission-critical designs, such

have basic
science applications in such areas as astrophysics, hydrodynamics, and
material properties
, and is expected to provide insight into the viability
of thermonuclear fusion as a future economic
energy source. This configuration change can take place not only when the system
is designed, but
also during operation, dynamically, in a single clock
cycle(6), to meet the instantaneous change
in needs of applications
implemented by the system.
