Racing against five other nations and death itself, the "World
Fliers" became the first pilots to circle the globe in the air, thrilling the
world with their achievement and helping put the United States at the
forefront of aviation development. Re-live the perilous journey when The
History Channel(R) presents FIRST FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD, premiering Sunday,
March 6th at 8:00 p.
In the wake of World War I, President Calvin Coolidge, striving to cut
military spending , viewed aviation as a novelty and an unnecessary expense for
the government. participation in a race around the world, competing against
France, Great Britain, Italy, Argentina, and Portugal. The award recognizes the dedication and
sacrifice of astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs ,
dating from 1961 to 1972. A third member of the Apollo 11 crew, command module pilot Michael
Collins , remained in orbit around the moon until Armstrong and Aldrin
returned from the moon's surface in the lunar module.

"The aerospace industry strongly supports the proposed funding levels for
defense and space systems modernization," Douglass said.
The budget proposal released Monday includes increases for weapons
procurement and research and development in the Defense Department as well as
full funding for NASA's Vision for Space Exploration. Expanded math and
science education , as well as a permanent R + D tax credit, Douglass said, can
ensure that the aerospace industry will have an innovative and highly skilled
workforce.
The proposal includes just $724 million for aeronautics R + D, a steep drop
from the $1.

Douglass said the budget includes increased funding for defense
procurement ($84 billion) and research ($73 billion), levels that are critical
to the nation's ability to deploy the precision mobile forces required to meet
the new international security challenges of the war on terror.

Using actual footage of the World Fliers, recreations of their journey,
archive news footage, and the perspectives of Ragozzino and a number of other
aviation experts, FIRST FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD recreates a thrilling event in
the history of flight that is often forgotten despite being truly monumental
in its day.

The moon rock will join other artifacts such as the actual Apollo-Soyuz

NEW YORK, In 1924, before Charles Lindbergh and
Amelia Erhardt etched their names into history with famous flights, a group of
American pilots authored one of the most daring and defining feats in aviation
history. The hope was that at least one of the planes would make it all
the way. Following the ceremony,
Aldrin will donate the moon rock to the California Science Center during a

The American Competitiveness Initiative enhances several science,

Highlights of the journey include:

* Technical details of the planes themselves, built specially for the race
by Douglas aircraft and equipped with interchangeable wheels and
pontoons for land and water landings
* Details of the tremendous logistical planning along the flight route,
which included diplomatic challenges over air and landing spots, and
also the use of more than 250,000 people and fifteen Navy destroyers and
three cruisers
* The biggest challenge of all: the elements, including blinding blizzards
and dense fog that forced the pilots to fly just feet above the ocean,
oppressive heat in the desert, typhoons in the pacific, and the bitter
cold of the North Atlantic
* A devastating crash early in the race that claims one plane, and the
crew's desperate struggle to survive being stranded in the mountains of
Alaska.
FIRST FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD was produced by Digital Ranch for The
History Channel. Buzz Aldrin will be honored by NASA as an Ambassador
of Exploration in a ceremony scheduled to take place March 25, 2006 at the
California Science Center.
