Long Island Mom Wins World Champion Martial Arts Title in Japan

To her opponent, Japan's Megumi
Yabushita -- the most honored and popular MMA fighter in Japan -- Laura
D'Auguste, of Long Beach, NY, is the female mixed martial arts champion of the
world!
On Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the Yoyogi Olympic Gymnasium in Tokyo,
Laura competed in "Smack Girl," an all-women's event that features the best
female mixed martial arts fighters in the world.
Having just left her husband, and after learning the basics at the
seminar, she decided to take self-defense classes at Tiger Schulmann's.

She was
in an abusive marriage and needed to protect herself and her young daughter. She
soon joined the TSK Fight Team and started competing in Mixed Martial Arts in
2000.

hometown fans, Laura beat Megumi by decision after going the full two
five-minute rounds.

the fact that this wish has now come true," says Ilona Hug, the widow of the
deceased martial artist. She was the winner of last year's Smack Girl ReMix
2004 tournament and a Japanese representative at this year 's ADCC World
Championships. In
addition to working day and night to earn her nursing degree, she
